About
Math is a fundamental element of the most beautiful things in our universe. It underpins all of science and is present in architecture, sports, fashion, music, art and more. Yet for many, math’s presence feels purely practical. Everyone knows math is useful but may not see its sublime beauty. Which makes sense: it takes time and practice to see its elegance.
You must learn to look — something few of us, even those with a natural affinity for math, have been taught to do.
But what if we could broaden our perspective? What if we could see math not as a set of rules to follow but as an endless series of patterns that offer a way to create meaning in the world?
How might we learn to look?
Infinite Sums is an invitation for you — a broad community ranging from math enthusiasts to the math averse. It’s for everyone who engages with and shapes our culture. Together, we’ll create an initiative that brings math to life through cultural experiences, uncovering its hidden beauty and letting it inspire and guide us. Because when we allow ourselves to be guided by beauty, we can widen our view of math and deepen our understanding of the world.
We seek to inspire a collective of math ‘ambassadors,’ challenging existing ideas of who can and should lead math engagement efforts. The initiative will cast a spotlight on people from both rural and urban communities, parents and caregivers, artists and cultural influencers and more. We will convene, connect and support organizations and individuals through events, grantmaking and community-building efforts.
Infinite Sums will change the trajectory of how math is appreciated and pursued. Through memorable experiences, people will see the beauty in math’s infinite intricacies — and perhaps discover how they fit into the pattern.
